The Golfito port area was developed by the United Fruit Company in the late 1930s. At that time, Zancudo's beaches were often strewn with excess bananas that washed down the Rio Coto river. Pig farms were able to thrive using the leftover bananas. Gringos starting moving to Zancudo in the 1980's. The rise in foreign settlement has brought about the demise of the pig in Zancudo, but the anecdotes about pigs running wild remain in Zancudo's colorful oral history.
Today, Zancudo blends the rustic charm of a small Costa Rican fishing village (population: about 450) with the romance of coconut palms, thatched roofs, and the rolling surf. The bumpy sand road connects homes and small businesses down the spine of our peninsula - you won't find asphalt nor sterile resorts in un-touristy Zancudo. In a beautiful natural setting you will find friendly Ticos and a cast of colorful characters. Relax and immerse yourself in the REAL Costa Rica.
The entire 6-mile stretch of land known as Zancudo Beach is bordered on the west side by the Pacific Ocean and the Golfo Dulce (Sweet Gulf). The southern three miles of the beach has jungle and farmland on the east side. The eastern side is bordered by mangrove waterways. The northernmost mile or so is where most of the local residents live. There is a school, a couple of churches, a soccer field, some Tico restaurants and bars, three sportfishing operations and a large store. This last section is where the mangrove waterways feed into the Rio Coto de Colorado, which in turn feeds into the Golfo Dulce. If you look due west, you can see the Osa Penninsula about 12 miles away. The ocean view goes forever if you gaze southwest.
In this little corner of paradise, there is a small, tranquil settlement of friendly hosts, comfortable accommodations, good food, casual atmosphere and refreshment for the body and soul. The beach at Playa Zancudo is well known for its long expanse of sun, sand, surf and sea. Here, the ocean is your playground - it offers superb safe swimming for all. At the protected end of the beach, the waves are gentle enough for child's play. As you walk south along the beach, the warm surf grows in size and intensity. Midway down the beach, you can enjoy body surfing and boogie boarding. Walk another 10 minutes down the beach, and you'll find great waves for board surfing. At nearby Pavones Beach is reputed to be the longest left-breaking wave in the world.
Along the southern Pacific coast of Costa Rica, near the old banana port of Golfito, there lies a long sandy beach that stretches for 6 miles along the warm blue waters of the Golfo Dulce. As far as the eye can see, the sparkling waters are fringed by coconut palms and almond trees.
